OK - true story - about three years ago my wife and I decided that our family room needed some color to balance the neutral tones of the walls and furniture. Instead of buying posters or other art, we decided that we'd head down to the local art store and pick up some canvases and cheap acrylic paint. So my young son, wife and myself each did a painting for the wall. I ended up enjoying the experience so much that I've continued to this day. Throughout my life I've had a love of art - visiting many galleries and shows across the country, occasionally picking up a painting for myself. When I began to paint on my own, I'd already established, to a certain degree, the elements in a painting that turned me on. I began to incorporate those things (texture, color, psychological/surreal ideas) into my work. I'm self-taught and simply learn by doing - making mistakes but always having fun. I've played and written music most of life. My art is an extension of that. I currently show in galleries or outdoor art shows in southern California. More about me and my music/art can be found at my website http://johnbarney.com/
Artist Statement: As a lifelong musician, I create art the same way I do music somewhat haphazardly, taking a wisp of an idea and making it whole. My only goal is to enjoy the process and hope that the finished product makes an emotional or psychological impact with the viewer. I dont pretend to have the answers to the universe in a painting rather, I hope the viewer finds their own meaning - as well as a spot in their home or office! Most of my work is done with a painting knife I find texture emotionally satisfying and prefer to use a wide array of color to communicate my message.
